Women's Tennis Adds Elizabeth Means to 2012-13 Team
FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the 2012 fall season just a couple months away, the FGCU women’s tennis team added some depth to its roster with the signing of incoming freshman Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS).
“We are tremendously excited about Elizabeth joining our team,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Gabou. “She is a top notch player and excellent student. I am looking forward to seeing her out on the courts joining her sister Sarah in some doubles action and will have an immediate impact on our team.”
Coming to the team in August as an incoming freshman, Means joins the Green and Blue after a solid high school career at Wiregrass Ranch, where she won a Florida Class 3A State doubles title with her sister Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) in 2011. In 2012, Means won two rounds at the Jacksonville Clay Court Championships and a singles champion at the Helen Drake Invitational in Miramar Beach. She also was a doubles finalist at the National Clay Court Championship in Fort Lauderdale.
“Florida Gulf Coast University has excellent academic programs that I wanted to be a part of and I wanted to be a part of their top women's tennis team,” said Means. “The coaches, Jennifer Gabou and Joey Barnes are very encouraging to their players. They prepare the team for ultimate success on the court as well as off the court. I believe in the work ethic of the team and I feel I can grow my game under their leadership.”
The Green and Blue earned a No. 3 seed in their first-ever 2012 A-Sun Championships and defeated Jacksonville (4-2) in the quarterfinals. The Eagles ended their run with a lost to host ETSU (4-1) in the semifinals.
Sarah Means was named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team and selected to the All-Freshmen team. Sophomore Bettina Botha (Cape Town, South Africa/DeKuilen HS) and junior Morgan Bechtel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) were honored as All-Academic team members with Botha being a unanimous selection. FGCU returns five of its six starters in the singles lineup in hopes of a return trip to the A-Sun Championships next season.
