FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) added a goal in the sixth minute and another mid-way through the second half to propel the FGCU women’s soccer team to its first-ever 3-0 start in Atlantic Sun play with a 2-0 shutout of Lipscomb on Friday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

The 3-0 start to A-Sun play is a surprising first for FGCU, who is 20-1-3 in its last 24 conference contests, has won back-to-back league regular season titles and is the reigning A-Sun Tournament champs. The Eagles are 8-2-2 overall on the season, while Lipscomb slipped to 2-7-2 and 0-3 in the A-Sun.

“I’m pleased with the game and how we played,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “We battled hard and Shannen gave us two goals again, which was great. This game really mattered to us and we’re happy to be leaving with three points.”

Wacker, who scored two goals in last Sunday’s 2-1 win at ETSU, has four tallies in her last two games and a team-high seven on the season. The reigning A-Sun Tournament MVP has equaled the team single-season record for game-winning goals (4) and is fifth in single-season goals, just four off of Lindsay Haw’s record of 11 set in 2007. Wacker entered tonight 24th in the nation in game-winning goals.

Equally as impressive as Wacker’s second straight multi-goal game was the effort turned in by the FGCU midfield and defense. The middle and defensive units were dominant on the ball over the 90-minute match, limiting the Bisons to just one shot. Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) was forced to make no saves in her fourth shutout of the year.

FGCU took a 1-0 lead at the 6:12 mark when freshman Shea Rhoney (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS) found Wacker with a cross into the middle of the goal box. Rhoney’s pass was on target, as Wacker one-touched it into the upper 90 for the early edge.

The 1-0 margin held up through the first 67 minutes until Wacker struck again at the 68:19 mark. This time, it was freshman Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) finding Wacker with another assist being credited to sophomore Julia Roddar (Falun, Sweden/Shattuck-St.Mary’s Academy/Wisconsin). Kasun worked out of the left corner, beating a couple of Lipscomb defenders wide and found a sliding Wacker for the insurance goal.

Wacker had a chance at just the third hat trick in the six-year program history, but her chip shot during a 1v1 attack with the keeper in the 73rd minute bounced just wide of the right post.

FGCU’s three points for the win puts it in sole possession of first place in the A-Sun after fellow unbeaten Jacksonville and North Florida finished in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles will take a three-game win streak into Sunday’s home showdown with the league’s newest member Northern Kentucky (4-7, 1-2) at 1 p.m. The Norse will come to the FGCU Soccer Complex fresh off their first-ever A-Sun victory, a 1-0 win at Stetson.
