@FGCU_WSoccer, Kasun Voted Top Picks in A-Sun Preseason Poll

FORT MYERS, Fla. - One year after winning its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament crown and third consecutive regular season title, FGCU Women's Soccer was tabbed as the top A-Sun conference team in the preseason coaches' poll released on Thursday afternoon by the league office. Sophomore Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) was named the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year, marking only the second time an FGCU student-athlete has won the award.

The Eagles also took two of the three fan-voted preseason awards; Kasun was named the fan-voted player of the year, while FGCU Sophomore Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) was named the fan-voted Goalkeeper of the Year.

In a vote conducted by the conference’s 10 head coaches, the Eagles received five first place votes, making them the predicted preseason favorite to bring home the conference regular season title and the A-Sun Tournament championship for the third consecutive year.

Six different teams received a first place vote with Jacksonville (73) occupying the second spot followed by ETSU and Mercer tied for third (72). FGCU took the top spot by 22 points (95), the largest margin of victory for a top predicted preseason A-Sun team since 2007.

The Eagles, who have boasted a player on the preseason team in five of the last six seasons, were one of two schools to place multiple players on the preseason All-Conference team. Sophomores Kasun and Emma Blackwell (Jenks, Okla./Jenks HS) and juniors Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) and Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) represented FGCU on the 11-member squad.

Kasun, who was the only unanimous pick to the A-Sun 2012 All Conference First Team, was also the 2012 A-Sun Tournament MVP and was named to the 2012 A-Sun All Freshmen Team.  The midfielder, who started all 21 games, was second on the team in points and goals in her first season. She had 7 goals for the Eagles last season, including the game winning goal in overtime against Mercer in the A-Sun Tournament Championship.

FGCU returns 14 players from last season, along with 10 newcomers. The Eagles will open the regular season against UF in Gainesville on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m., and open play at home against Albany on Sunday, August 25 at 1 p.m.

FGCU season tickets can be purchased in person at the Alico Arena ticket office or by phone at 239-590-7145. Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. The FGCU ticket office is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and one hour prior to the ticketed event. An adult season ticket is $30, while a youth (3-12 years) ticket is $15. Single game tickets can also be bought at $6 for adults and $3 for youth. Groups of 10+ can get in for $3 a person. FGCU students and faculty/staff get in free with their Eagle ID.
