Women's Golf Places Seventh at The Ocala Spring Invitational

Ocala, Fla. – Following Tuesday’s final round at the 2013 Ocala Spring Invitational at the Juliette Falls Golf Course, the FGCU women’s golf team placed seventh in the 14-team field. Led by sophomore Chelsea Guoynes, (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) who finished in 11th place individually.

"Today was a little up and down, Im really proud of Chelsea (Guoynes) for battling it out when she was sick," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We didn't play bad but we didn't play our best either. We really need to work on making better decisions out there and staying focused during the round."

Mercer led the tournament through all three rounds and won with a total score of 883. Stetson (890), Toledo (893), Morehead State (900) and Daytona State (905) all finished in the top five.

Entering the day in a tie for sixth place, the Eagles shot a 311 total team score on the final day, bringing their team score to 315-295-311/921 to place seventh, just one stroke back of sixth place.

Guoynes paced the Green and Blue through all three rounds of competition. The sophomore finished the first round with a 3-over par (75) and then fired a 1-under par (71) in the second round to move into a tie for 6th place on the individual leaderboard. In the final round, Guoynes shot a 77 (5-over par) to finish in 11th place with a total score of 223 (75-71-77).

Freshman Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) also shot a 5-over par (77) and finished in a tie for 18th place with a final total score of 228 (80-71-77).

Junior Megan Van Etten (Trinity Fla./JW Mitchell HS) dropped back into a tie for 44th after a final round score of 81 (9-over par) and a total score of 234 (75-78-81). Megan participated as an individual and her score doesn’t get tallied with the team score.  

Freshman Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) also finished in a tie for 44th with Megan Van Etten, with a total score of 234 (80-75-77) after shooting a final round score of 79 (7-over par).

Sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) finished the tournament in a tie for 51st with a total score of 236 (80-78-78). Freshman Rebecca Van Etten (Trinity Fla./JW Mitchell HS) rounded out the five-player field for FGCU in 65th place after shooting a 9-over par (81) in the final round to finish with a total score of 242 (83-78-81).

The Eagles will be back in action Friday when they travel to Crystal River, Fla. to compete in the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational.
