BROUSSARD, La. - Through day one of play at the Le Triomphe Collegiate Invitational at Le Triomphe Golf & Country Club in Broussard, La., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in second place and one stroke off the lead on the 16-team leaderboard. Individually, sophomore Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) leads the team, sitting in a tie for fifth overall.

“Im really pleased with the way we played in the first round,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “This is a tough golf course that can really penalize you if you get out of position. We played very smart golf and did not deviate from our game plan. The wind in the second round picked up significantly and it has been a long time since I’ve seen conditions this difficult. I think every team struggled across the board. Tomorrow we are just going out with the mindset of playing one shot at a time  and adding all the scores up at the end of the day to see where we finish.”

The Green and Blue combined for an opening round score of 312 (24-over par) to position themselves one stroke off the top spot on the leaderboard. The Eagles started round two but unfortunately play was suspended due to darkness. This is the second straight tournament that FGCU was unable to finish two rounds on day one. At the Hurricane Invitational, play was suspended in the second round due to darkness.

Lamar leads the tournament at 23-over par, followed by FGCU and host McNeese State in second at 24-over par through one round. South Alabama sits in fourth (320) followed by Xavier and Houston Baptist in a tie for fifth (321).

Guoynes led the charge with a 3-over par (75) in the first round. Redshirt junior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) and sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) are right behind Guoynes after they both carded a 78 (6-over par) in the first round and are tied for ninth individually.

Freshman Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Mich./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) is currently in a tie for 24th  after shooting a 81 (9-over par) in the first round. Freshman Rebecca Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./JW Mitchell HS) rounds out the five-player field for the Eagles in a tie for 48thplace at 12-over par (84) through the first 18 holes of play.

The second round of the Hurricane Invitational will resume tomorrow at the Le Triomphe Golf & Country Club Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. followed by the final round after that.
