Women’s Golf Finishes Ninth at Season-Opening Chip-N Club Invitational

LINCOLN, Neb. – Following Tuesday’s final round of play at the Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln, the FGCU women’s golf team placed ninth on the 15-team leaderboard. Senior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) led the Eagles, finishing in a three-way tie for 15th individually.

“I am really proud of the way the ladies hung in there on a course that is quite difficult,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “The wind picked up in the afternoon and we played our last three holes even par as a team. We struggled a little today but we have some good things to take away from here and work on before we travel to USF next month.”

The Eagles entered the final day in eighth place with a two-round score of 630, however the final round 329 moved the Green and Blue into ninth place with a total score of 959 (317-313-329).

Redlands Community College topped the leaderboard entering Tuesday, but it was SMU who walked away with the tournament title with a score of 920 (312-302-306), one stroke better than Redlands’ 921 (312-301-308).

Haremza led the Eagles throughout the two-day tournament. The Wilderman, South Africa native carded a 79 on the final day to bring her three-round total to 232 (81-72(E)-79) and finish in a three-way tie for 15th on the 80-player leaderboard.

Junior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) finished five strokes back of Haremza, submitting a 237 (78-77-82) to place in a tie for 25th. Concluding her first collegiate tournament, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) recorded a three-round total of 245 (78-85-82) for share of 45th.

Sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and junior transfer Cassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Daytona State College) rounded out the Eagle scoring. Van Etten finished in a split of 56th with a total of 249 (80-80-89), while Cleary handed in a 257 (87-84-86) to sit in a tie for 69th.

The Eagles will be return to the course when they head to Bradenton, Fla. to take part in the USF-Waterlefe Invitational on October 10-11. Results and recaps from the tournament will be provided at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each day.
