FORT MYERS, Fla. – Under the direction of first-year head coach Sarah Trew, the FGCU women’s golf team will open the 2011 fall season with a trip to Lincoln, Neb. to take part in the Chip-N-Club Invitational hosted by Nebraska. The two-day, 54-hole event will commence with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, and conclude with a final round on Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Lincoln.

“I am extremely excited to open up our season in Nebraska,” said Trew. “We have had some very solid practice sessions and are eager to take our hard work to the competitive arena. This tournament gives us the opportunity to play against new opponents and we cannot wait to get started.”

Marking the program’s first time competing at the event, FGCU will take to the course with 14 schools, including Akron, Creighton, Houston Baptist, Iowa, McNeese State, Missouri State, Nebraska, North Dakota State, Redlands CC, Sam Houston State, SMU, South Dakota, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Wichita State.

The Eagles lineup will feature three returners and a pair of newcomers at the two-day event. Senior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) finished last spring with a strong outing, placing second overall at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship with a 221 (75-72(E)-74). Junior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) placed in the top five in seven tournaments last season, including all five spring competitions, taking one medalist honor, en route to a unanimous All-Conference selection. Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) returns for her sophomore campaign after competing in all nine tournaments a season ago, while recording one top 10, three top 15 and four top 20 finishes.

A pair of newcomers will also compete in the five-member Eagle squad. Junior transfer Cassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Daytona State College) will join the Green and Blue following a two-year stint at Daytona State College, where she was a member of two NJCAA National Championship teams. Also new to the team, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) was the medalist in eight of Fort Myers’ 10 regular season matches, earning Fort Myers News-Press All-Area Girls Golfer of the Year in both her junior and senior seasons.
