JEYKLL ISLAND, Ga. – Opening play at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Monday morning at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in a tie for third place on the 10-team leaderboard.

“Overall, we played pretty well today. Georgia (Price) and Kristin (Swindell) both had really solid rounds for us,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “I can honestly say collectively we hit the ball today as well as I have ever seen. We always say that you can’t win a tournament on the first day and I think we left ourselves in a really good spot tomorrow. We feel very confident and comfortable out on this course and tomorrow we are looking to move up on the leaderboard.”

Competing in its fifth A-Sun Championship, the Eagles’ five-member squad opened the tournament with a team score of 298 to sit alone in fifth place, one stroke ahead of North Florida (299). Six teams broke 300 on the afternoon, with ETSU leading the field into the second day of competition with one-under par 287.

Finishing the day in the top 10 on the leaderboard, sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) and redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) fired rounds of 71 (1-under par) and 73 (1-over par), respectively, to sit in shares of 3rd and 8th overall.

Redshirt junior Briana Carlson (Inverness Fla./Citrus HS) was the third member of the Green and Blue to finish within the top 20 in a tie for 18th overall after shooting an opening round score of 76 (4-over par).

Freshmen Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) and sophomore Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) finished in a tie for both 31st and 35th, respectively after scores of 78 (6-over par) and 79 (7-over par), respectively.

The three-day championship tournament resumes with the second round of play on Tuesday morning from the Jeykll Island Golf Club beginning at 8 a.m. Fans can follow the action at www.Golfstat.com, while results and recaps from each day of the event will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com.
