Women's Golf Wraps Up Day One of the Hurricane Invitational
Monday, February 04, 2013 | by Matt Judd

MIAMI, Fla. - Through day one of play at the season-opening Hurricane Invitational at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Miami, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in a tie for 10th place on the 16-team leaderboard. Individually, freshman Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) leads the squad, sitting in a tie for 19th overall.

“Today we definitely were knocking some cobwebs off. This course can be difficult if you get out of position,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “We hung in there pretty well and for a while in the second round we were beating some pretty good teams. I am proud of the way we played and know we didn’t even play our best golf. I am excited to see what tomorrow holds.”

The Green and Blue combined for an opening round score of 314 to position themselves 11th on leaderboard. On the second round, the Eagles were a combined 22-over par and all five student-athletes played through at least 14 holes before play was suspended due to darkness. Middle Tennessee sits one stroke ahead of the Green and Blue in ninth while Campbell sits three strokes ahead in eighth.

Texas State leads the tournament at 17-over par, followed by Baylor in second at 21-over par through almost two rounds.

Detlefsen led the charge with a 6-over par (77) in the first round and is currently 1-over par through 14 in the second round. Redshirt junior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) was right behind Detlefsen carding an 80 (9-over par) in the first round and is currently 4-over par through 15 in the second for a tie for 42nd overall.

Sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) sits in a tie for 53rd, finishing the first 18 with an 85 (14-over par) and is 7-over par through 12 holes in the second round. Redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) is currently in a tie for 62nd at 17-over par through 33 holes. Freshman Rebecca Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./JW Mitchell HS) rounds out the five-player field for the Eagles in 89th place at 37-over par through 34 holes.

Sophomore Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) played as an individual and sits in a tie for 62nd place with an 83 (12-over par) in the first round and is 5-over par through 15 in the second round. Her score will not count towards the team’s score.
