Price Takes Home Medalist Honors; FGCU Finishes Fourth at JU Courtyard Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Following Tuesday's final round of play at the 2012 JU Courtyard Classic at Hidden Hills Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team placed fourth on the 10-team leaderboard. Sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) led the Eagles, finishing in first place overall after winning a three-hole playoff.

“Today we struggled a bit as a team,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “I’m extremely proud of Georgia for winning this event and I’m very happy with her play over the last two tournaments. Our team is really starting to come together and see the results of hard work. I can’t wait to get back on the course this weekend.”

Entering the day in tied for second place, the Eagles shot a 308 on the final day, bringing their team score to 310-294-308/912 (+48) to place fourth, just one stroke back of third place South Alabama (309-300-302/911) and two strokes behind of second place Daytona State (308-296-306/910).

Finishing first in the field of 59 individuals after picking up a birdie on the third playoff hole, Price concluded the three-day event with a round of 74, bringing her score to 75-70-74/219. The win is the first of Price’s young career and makes her the ninth Eagle in program history to win an event.  

Freshman Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) carded a 79 in the final round to finish the tournament with a score of 76-76-79/231 to place 18th. Redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) finished the third round with a 10-over 82 to end the event tied for 19th place.

Freshman Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) carded an 8-over 80 to finish the event t-29th place.

Rounding out the Eagles scorecard was freshman Rebecca Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./JW Mitchell HS), who turned in her lowest round of the event. Sharing 31st overall, Van Etten’s 75 in the final round moved her up 12 spots on the leaderboard and brought her score to 83-81-75/239.

The Eagles will return to the course on Sunday, Oct. 21 for the opening day of the 35th Annual Pat Bradley Invitational hosted by FIU in Sarasota, Fla.
