MACON, Ga. – Senior Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) became the first FGCU women’s cross country runner since 2011 and second all-time to earn Runner of the Week honors when the Atlantic Sun Conference announced its weekly award winners on Wednesday morning.
The well-deserved honor comes as a result of Perzanowski’s record-shattering performance in the women’s 6k at last Saturday’s Mountain Dew Invitational at UF. Perzanowski led the pack of 270 runners to cross the finish line in 20 minutes and 45.06 seconds, while crushing the former record of 22:02.6 and outpacing competitors from Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina, Miami, Stetson and North Florida.
In both of FGCU’s meets this season, Perzanowski has led the Eagles while claiming the individual title in both races. Last weekend her stand-out time led the Eagles to claim 11th place overall, outrunning state-foe Miami in 12th and conference rival Stetson in 13th. That finish followed the Eagles first-place finish at the Westminster Collegiate Invite to open the 2013 season.
In her four seasons at FGCU, Perzanowski has left her mark on the all-time record book as she claims the top spot for both the 5k and the 6k. Additionally, she holds three of the top-five 6k times and five of the top-10 5k times.
The first FGCU runner to earn the A-Sun’s weekly honor was Barrie Cohen after her seventh-place finish in the Disney World Cross Country Classic women’s 5k with a time of 18:42.70.
The Eagles take to the trail again for another 6k against a group of tough competitors in Minneapolis, Minn. for the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28.
