FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU cross country teams are set to complete at the 2012 Walt Disney World Invitational this Saturday, October 6, at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The men’s team will compete in the 8k at 7:45 a.m. followed by the women’s 5k, which is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

This will mark the 10th time FGCU has competed in this event with the highest-ever finish for both teams coming last season. The men’s squad finished in second place out of 24 teams last year while the women’s team finished in fourth place out of 28 teams. Juniors Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) and Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Eastern Kentucky) finished in 7th and 12th place, respectively, in the 8k event. For the women, senior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional HS) and junior Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) finished 7th and 10th place, respectively.

“The team always looks forward to the Disney Cross Country Classic. It’s a great environment,” said head coach Cassandra Goodson. “So far, in training, the guys look great and there should be some good competition for the women. We are resting some key individuals coming off a good performances in Louisville. I haven't had a group that has worked this hard so consistently. I see a lot of enthusiasm and this is really a great group of lady’s, they are incredibly close. All that we want them to do is to pursue their best. To go out and do what we’re capable of and let the chips fall where they may.”

This year 46 teams will compete in the men’s division while 52 teams will run in the women’s event.

The men’s team is coming off an 11th-place finish at the Greater Louisville Classic where they defeated programs such as Vanderbilt, Marquette and Saint Louis. Cruz set a personal best and a program-record in the 8k with a time of 25.20.64. On the women’s side, the Eagles finished in 26th place, with Perzanowski leading the Green and Blue with a time of 18.52.15 followed by Cohen who set a new program record for a senior in the 5k with a time of 18:58.44.

Cruz and Perzanowski have led the Eagles in all three events this year. Cruz has set three of top six times, in FGCU history in the 8k this year as well as setting the three fastest times for a junior at FGCU. Cohen owns the three fastest times for a senior at FGCU in the 5k with her fastest time coming last weekend.

Results and recaps from both races will be available at at the conclusion of the event.
