SAARLOUIS, Germany – Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball alumna Brittany Kennedy ’13 (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark High School) has signed a professional contract with the Saarlouis Royals. Kennedy will continue her basketball career in the DBBL, Germany’s highest level of competition for women.
“’BK’ was an outstanding point guard and leader for us the past two seasons,” explained FGCU Head Coach Karl Smesko. “I am excited that she has this opportunity to continue what she loves to do. I have no doubts that she will have a great year.”
In two years with the Eagles, Kennedy left a mark as a strong defensive player and a standout point guard. She totaled 483 points, 284 rebounds, 260 assists and 148 steals during her time with FGCU.
As a senior, the West Coast product was a unanimous First Team All-Atlantic Sun selection and was named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year. Kennedy led the team with 173 assists and 88 steals in 2012-13, while averaging 9.7 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game and 5.2 assists per game. She started 33 games for the Eagles and led the team to a 27-7 overall record with a perfect 18-0 A-Sun mark. She capped off her career with an All-Tournament Team nod during the 2013 A-Sun Tournament.
Kennedy pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds and scored 10 points at Mercer on Jan. 2 for her first career double-double. The point guard recorded a career-high 19 points on two occasions during her senior campaign and dished out a record 12 assists at ETSU on Jan. 12. The assist performance ranks second among all-time Eagle records.
As an underclassman, Kennedy played in 63 games during two seasons with Oregon State. She scored 192 points and dished out 113 assists for the Beavers before transferring to FGCU.
Kennedy will join the Royals in Saarlouis as they begin the 2013-14 season on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Royals are two-time national champions and three-time winners of the National Cup of Germany.
"We are very eagerly waiting to see what Brittany can do for us,” said Saarlouis Head Coach René Spandauw. “We are a team that plays pressure defense and runs, so we think she is a very good fit for our team. We have received very good reports through Coach Smesko, so we are confident Brittany will be a very valuable part of our team.”
The DBBL season will continue through March. Games will be streamed live on the league’s website, http://www.dbbl.de/cms/.
