Haas' Solid Night Can’t Lead FGCU Past Winthrop in WNIT First Round

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Stephanie Haas (Avon Lake, Ohio/Magnificat HS) scored a team-high 13 points as the FGCU women's basketball team fell to Winthrop, 65-51, in a WNIT first round matchup on Thursday night at Alico Arena.
With the loss, FGCU finishes the season with a 27-7 overall, while Winthrop improves to 21-11 on the season and will move on to face Florida in the second round of the WNIT. The loss also snaps the Eagles’ 10-game home winning streak, which was the 14th longest in the nation.
Haas shot 5-of-12 from the field and knocked down a pair of triples to finish with 13 points. Reigning A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) recorded eight points and four assists. A-Sun Tournament MVP Joyce Iamstrong (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South HS/Jefferson College) finished with 12 points and 10 boards, while the 2013 A-Sun Player of the Year Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Dequesha McClanahan led WU with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Schaquilla Nunn added 17 points and 13 boards.
Both teams struggled offensively over the first 16 minutes of the first half. A layup from Aliyah Kilpatrick gave WU a 21-16 lead with 3:29 left in the opening period. The Green and Blue used a 10-4 run, highlighted by five points from Haas, over the final 2:55 of the period to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
FGCU opened up the second half with a 6-1 run to grab a six-point lead (their largest advantage of the game) at 32-26 with 18:18 left to play. Winthrop then went on to outscore the Green and Blue 39-19 over the final 17:55 to pick up the huge 65-51 upset of FGCU.
As a team, FGCU shot just 29.5 percent (18-of-61) from the field and 12-of-44 (27.3 percent) from behind the arc, compared to a 45.5 percent (25-of-55) mark for Winthrop. The Green and Blue were forced into 14 turnovers and lost the rebound battle 42-36.
