FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast women’s basketball team climbed one spot to the No. 8 position in the sixth edition of the 2012-13 CollegeInsider.com Women's Basketball Mid-Major Top 25 poll, announced on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles were ranked No. 9 in last week’s poll.
Gonzaga, receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll, along with Green Bay, Middle Tennessee, Delaware, and Chattanooga hold the top five spots in the poll.
The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast.
The Green and Blue are the lone Atlantic Sun Conference team represented in the Top 25, while Stetson (7) and Mercer (5) received votes.
In FGCU’s last game (Dec. 5), senior Joyce Iamstrong (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South HS/Jefferson College) scored a team-high 10 points as a long second half scoring drought caused the Eagles to fall to in-state foe USF, 67-46, at The Sun Dome.
The Green and Blue (4-4) will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 16 (2 p.m.) when they head to Blacksburg, Va. to battle ACC foe Virginia Tech (4-3) in non-conference action.
