FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast women’s basketball team earned the No. 9 spot in the first edition of the 2012-13 CollegeInsider.com Women's Basketball Mid-Major Top 25 poll, announced on Tuesday.
Delaware, ranked No. 10 in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll, opens the year as the top-ranked team, after recording a 31-2 overall record, capturing their first Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round last season.
The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast Conference.
The Green and Blue are the only Atlantic Sun Conference team represented in the Top 25, while Stetson received 16 votes
FGCU, previously tabbed by the media as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 A-Sun regular season and A-Sun tournament crowns, return six players, including Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) and Preseason All-Conference choice Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS), from last year’s squad that finished with a 29-3 overall record and verified the conference’s third-ever unbeaten regular season (18-0) by cruising through the Atlantic Sun Tournament and taking the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Hansen is FGCU’s top returning scorer (14.3 ppg) and rebounder (6.3 rpg). She also ranked in the top-15 in the A-Sun in six categories (points, rebounds, FG Pct., FT Pct., steals, blocks) and 18th in the nation in field goal percentage (.524).
Aiming for their tenth 20-plus win season and second appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Eagles will tip off the program’s 11th season by hosting the Royals of Warner at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 at Alico Arena.
