FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast women's basketball game against Stetson on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Alico Arena will mark FGCU’s annual ‘Play4Kay’ (formerly Pink Zone) game, as well as the 2011-12 NCAA ‘Pack the House’ event, which the Green and Blue won last season with an attendance of 2,921 vs. ETSU on Feb. 23. Tip off is set for 7:05 p.m.
All fans in attendance will receive pink 3-point placards and leis to help root on the Eagles, who will be wearing pink Nike warmup shirts and pink Nike socks, on Saturday night as they faceoff with the Hatters. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink and help the Eagles support the fight against breast cancer. FGCU Athletics will be in the front of Alico Arena selling pink t-shirts for fans to purchase ($10), with proceeds from the sales going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Tickets are still available for Saturday’s showdown between the first place Eagles and second place Hatters and can be purchased at www.FGCUAthletics.com/tickets or by calling the FGCU Ticket Office at 239-590-7145.
Known as the WBCA Pink Zone game since its inception in 2007, the initiative is being rebranded this year to keep the story and legacy of Kay Yow at the forefront. The mission of the event is "a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond."
‘Pack the House’ is a national effort in which conferences and institutions compete to grow women’s basketball attendance. NCAA Division I institutions select a women’s basketball home game and designate that date as a "Pack the House" game with the goal of setting an attendance record. One winner from each of the 32 conferences and one from a group of independent institutions is selected at the conclusion of the challenge. Selections are based on marketing plan creativity and attendance criteria. For the past two seasons, the Atlantic Sun Conference is the only Division I conference in the country to have 100% participation in the Pack the House Challenge. The NCAA will make a $500 donation to a non-profit organization on behalf of the A-Sun winner of the Pack the House Challenge.
The Eagles, who could win the A-Sun Regular Season crown and also secure the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament with a victory on Saturday, will play their quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Feb. 29. Tip-off times are still to be determined. FGCU Athletics is now offering ticket packages for the conference tournament at Mercer in Macon, Ga. Fans can get ticket booklets that include admission into every game of the men’s and women’s tournament (14 games) for $75. All tickets are general admission. Tickets can be purchased by calling the FGCU ticket office Monday-Friday, between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 239-590-7145, in person at the Alico Arena ticket office or by ordering online at www.FGCUAthletics.com/tickets. Tickets through the FGCU ticket office must be purchased by 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27.
