Eagles Take Care of Hawai’i, 72-52, on the Road

HONOLULU, Hawai’i – Three Eagles scored in double figures as the FGCU women’s basketball team defeated tourney host Hawaii, 72-52, on the second day of the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
With the win, FGCU improves to 9-2 overall, while the Rainbow Rahine fall to 5-9 on the season.
The Green and Blue, who lead the nation in three-point field goals per game (12.5), knocked down nine trifectas on the night. Four different players made at least one trey for the Eagles, led by senior Eglah Griffin’s (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS/Seminole CC) 4-of-8 night.
Senior Nicoya Jackson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs HS/Southwestern Christian) scored a game-high 19 points to go with five rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Sarah Hansen (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) finished with 15 points and three boards. Griffin chipped in with 12 points and a pair of rebounds. Junior Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) and freshman Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds HS) each finished with six points. Knight also recorded four rebounds and four blocks, while Kennedy dished four assists.
Vicky Tagalicod led Hawaii with 14 points, while Kamilah Jackson posted her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Trailing Hawaii, 11-6, with 14:31 remaining in the opening half, the Eagles used a 21-8 run, highlighted by seven points from Jackson, to grab an 8-point lead, 27-19, with just under seven minutes left in the first period.
The Rainbow Rahine responded with a quick 8-0 run to tie the game at 27-27 at the 3:20 mark of the first half. The Green and Blue would hold Hawaii scoreless for the remainder of the stanza and went on a 10-0 spurt over the final 2:37 of the first half to take a 37-27 lead into the locker room at the half.
Hawaii shot 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) from the field and 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) from behind the arc in the first half.
FGCU hit 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the floor in the first half, including 4-of-10 (40 percent) from long distance.
In the second half, FGCU continued their solid play and increased their lead to as many as 22 points before picking up the 72-52 win.
FGCU concludes their non-conference schedule against Alcorn State tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. ET in their final game in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. The Braves (2-9 overall) are 0-2 in the tourney after falling to Hawaii (66-63) and NC State (85-70).
