FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast women’s basketball team earned the No. 8 spot in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 poll, announced on Tuesday evening. The Eagles were ranked No. 11 in last week’s mid-major poll.
Green Bay, Gonzaga, Princeton, Delaware and James Madison are the top five teams in the poll.
The women's Mid-Major Top 25 is comprised of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast Conference.
FGCU is the lone Atlantic Sun Conference team represented in this week’s Top 25.
In the Eagles last game, a 106-27 win over Webber International (Nov. 28), senior Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) scored her 1,000th career point and the Green and Blue tied the NCAA record for three-pointers made in a single game with 21. FGCU’s 21 three-point ranks them tied for first place tie all-time with New Mexico State. The Aggies drained 21 triples against Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 23, 2002. The 21 threes are also an A-Sun record, as FGCU made six treys in the first half and 15 in the second.
The Eagles return to the court Saturday, Dec.3 for the 2011-12 Atlantic Sun opener against ETSU. Gametime is set for 7:30 p.m. and is the second part of a doubleheader with the men’s program.
