FORT MYERS, Fla. – Redshirt-freshman Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) scored a career-high 27 and picked up tournament MVP honors as the FGCU women’s basketball team defeated SIU Edwardsville, 73-68, in the final game of the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic on Sunday night at Alico Arena.

The Cougars fall to 11-18 overall, while the 2010-11 A-Sun regular season champs improve to 27-3 overall and extend their home winning streak, which is the third longest in the nation behind UConn and Stanford, to 41 games.

Senior Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), who earned an All-Tournament team selection, and junior Nicoya Jackson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs HS/Southwestern Christian) each chipped in with 12 points.

Jazmin Hill led the Cougars with a team-high 20 points, while Melia Duncan and Michaela Herrod both finished with 12 points in the loss.

SIUE jumped out to a quick 10-6 lead, capped by a three-pointer from Hill with 11:03 left in the first half.

The two teams battled back-and-forth over the next six minutes of the half, which included six ties. Trailing Edwardsville 30-29, the Eagles used a 6-0 spurt over the final 2:11 of the half to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

SIUE was 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) from the field and 6-of-10 (60 percent) from behind the arc in the first half.

In the second half with the score tied at 37-37, the Eagles employed a 15-6 run, capped by a triple from Jackson with 10:26 left, to grab a 52-43 advantage. The Cougars responded with a 19-8 run to take a two-point lead with less than three minutes to go in the game.

The Blue and Green went on to outscore SIUE 13-6 over the final 2:30 of the game to pick up the 73-68 victory.
