Karl Smesko Ranked Among Nation's Top Mid-Major Coaches
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast women's basketball coach Karl Smesko has been named to a list honoring the top Mid-Major head coaches in NCAA Division I by the National Women's Basketball Insider website.
Smesko ranked fourth on that list behind Kevin McGuff (Xavier), Aaron Johnson (SDSU) and Rick Insell (Middle Tennessee). He was the only Atlantic Sun Conference head coach to be named in the top five.
“It’s nice recognition for our program,” said Smesko. “I appreciate the efforts of our players, coaches, trainer, and support personnel who have helped our program receive positive recognition.”
Smesko, through eight seasons at FGCU, has an astounding 204-41 overall record and his three-season record in the A-Sun Conference is 47-9. Those numbers represent more than an 83 percent success rate overall and in conference. Since making the jump to Division I three seasons ago, Smesko and the Eagles are 72-21 (.774) overall.
Last season, the Eagles posted 24 wins to secure the program’s seventh 21-plus win season in the eight-year program history. Prior to the season, FGCU received the program’s first invitation to play in the preseason WNIT, where they advanced to the second round with a win over UTEP before falling to New Mexico and Georgia Tech. The Eagles secured their third consecutive postseason WNIT automatic bid after finishing A-Sun play with a 17-3 record, good for second place. By participating in the 2010 postseason WNIT, FGCU became the first A-Sun school to make three consecutive WNIT appearances.
By going 14-0 at home during the 2009-10 season, the Blue and Green extended their home winning streak to 24 games. The 24-game winning streak is the fourth longest current home winning streak in Division I women’s basketball heading into the 2010-11 campaign. The Eagles are 41-3 (.932) all-time in Alico Arena, which ranks second overall in Division I home court winning percentage behind Tennessee.
The Eagles have won one A-Sun regular season title and finished second in the conference on two occasions since joining the conference in 2007-08. FGCU, as a Division II power, went to the 2007 National Championship game.
