Smesko Adds Burge to Women's Basketball Coaching Staff
FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU head women's basketball coach Karl Smesko has announced that Herman Burge will become the newest assistant coach on the Eagles staff.
“I’m excited to add Herman to the staff,” said Smesko. “He comes very highly recommended. I have a lot of respect for what the staff at Mercer was able to accomplish the last few years. Herman’s knowledge of the conference will be an asset.”
Burge comes to FGCU after spending the last two seasons as an assistant at Mercer University. At Mercer, Burge handled scouting and recruiting efforts. In his second season, Burge helped lead the Bears to an 11-9 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play, which landed the team the No. 2 seed in the 2010 A-Sun Championships.
Working with Mercer’s guards, Burge had influence over 2010 A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-Conference selection Courtney Ford and also a second team All-Atlantic Sun pick LaToya Jackson in 2008-09.
“I’m very thankful to coach Smesko for giving me this opportunity,” said Burge. “I’m very excited and ready to contribute to the championship tradition and be a part of a great community.”
The Oklahoma City, Okla. native attended Oklahoma City University for his freshman and sophomore seasons, playing basketball for the Stars in 2003-05. In his second season at OCU, Burge helped lead the team to the second round of the NAIA Tournament.
Burge then transferred to Valdosta State (Ga.), where he spent two seasons with the Blazers. As a senior, Burge averaged 13.0 points and 2.9 rebounds, while also leading the Gulf South Conference in assists (6.3 per game, including 15 in a single contest) and free-throw percentage (87.6-percent). He also finished second in the league in steals (2.4 per game) and fifth in three-point percentage (44.6-percentage). For his efforts, Burge earned All-GSC first team honors in 2006-07.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT HERMAN BURGE:
“Coach Smesko has hired an outstanding assistant coach in Herman Burge. He will bring an uncanny passion for the game, a relentless work ethic and a contagious winning spirit. Herman will be a great addition to the championship tradition of the FGCU women's basketball program.”
