Eagles Set to Face New Mexico in Preseason WNIT
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The FGCU women's basketball team will face New Mexico Sunday at 4 p.m. EST in The Pit. The Eagles battle the Lobos in the second round of the 2009 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. UNM defeated Northern Colorado in the opening round and FGCU beat UTEP to set the stage for Sunday. Live stats and live video of the game can be found on www.GoLobos.com.
FGCU enters the game undefeated at 1-0 and is coming off a 66-54 victory over the UTEP Miners on Friday night. Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col.) led the Eagles with 19 points and six rebounds. Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.) chipped in 15 points while Brittany Brown (Flint, Mich.) had 11 points off the bench. FGCU shot 36 percent from the field and hit 19-of-26 free throws.
New Mexico is 1-0 on the year after the victory over the Northern Colorado Bears Friday night. The Lobos pulled out a 81-59 win over the Bears to advance. Four Lobos reached double figures including a team-high 16 from senior Amy Beggin. Jessica Kielpinski had 11 points while Valerie Kast chipped in 13. Lauren Taylor made her first career start and scored 12 points.
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to face either Georgia Tech or Oklahoma State on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets and Cowgirls play in Stillwater Sunday at 3 p.m. EST.
The prestigious preseason tournament features 16 teams, 11 of which played in the postseason last year. The format for the event guarantees each squad three tilts. Second-round contests will be played Nov. 15-16; semifinals will be Nov. 18-19; and the championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 22.
