Chelsea Dermyer nearly recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists in FGCU's win over NJIT.
EDINBURG, Tex. - Delia De La Torre scored a game-high 21 points, Chelsea Dermyer nearly recorded a triple-double and five Eagles scored in double figures as the FGCU women's basketball team defeated NJIT 75-63 in their first game of the National Independent Tournament.
With the win, FGCU improves to 19-8 overall, while NJIT falls to 8-19 overall.
Five Eagles scored in double-figures, led by De La Torre's (las Cruces, N.M.) 21 points. Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.) had a very solid outing, picked up her first double-double of the season and nearly recorded the first triple double in FGCU history. Dermyer finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Mandi Pierce (Altoona, Pa.) chipped in with 14 points. Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.) missed out on her second double-double by one rebound, but finished with 10 points and nine boards.
NJIT was led by Erika Valez's 15 points.
The Eagles will be back in action to play game two of the National Independent Tourney on Friday, Mar. 7 when they face Chicago State. Tip-off is scheduled at 3:30 pm CT.
