Eagles Defeat Defending A-Sun Champs, 59-41, To Win Sixth Straight
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Adrianne McNally scored a game-high 19 points and Mandi Pierce snagged a career-high nine rebounds as the Eagles knocked off Belmont, the defending Atlantic Sun Champions, 59-41 Saturday night at the Curb Event Center.
With the win the Eagles improve to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the A-sun, while the Bruins fall to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The Eagles never trailed in the ballgame as they got out to a 6-3 lead with 16:35 left in the first half and never looked back. The Eagles shot 21-of-43 (48.8 percent) from the field and shot a season-low eight three-pointers. FGCU’s defense played a major part in the victory as the Eagles held Belmont to only 11-of-48 (22.9 percent) shooting from the field and 6-of-24 (25 percent) from long distance, while forcing them into 20 turnovers.
Two Eagles scored in double-figures, led by McNally’s (Howell, Mich.) 19 points and nine rebounds. For the game, McNally made 6-of-9 attempts from the field and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. She also had three assists and two steals.
Delia De La Torre (Las Cruces, N.M.) tallied 14 points. De La Torre grabbed six rebounds and registered two steals, while knocking down 4-of-8 shots from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) registered eight points, three steals and two rebounds, before suffering a minor injury in the beginning of the second half. Haegele connected on 3-of-3 shots from the field and 1-of-1 from the free-throw line.
Mandi Pierce (Altoona, Pa.) added six points and two assists to go along with her career-high nine rebounds. Belmont was led by Brooke Sunday’s 10 points.
The Eagles will be back in action when they host Lipscomb on Monday, February 4 in Alico Arena. The game is set to tip-off at 7 p.m.
