Women's Basketball Announces 2007-08 Schedule
Fort Myers, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team has announced the 2007-08 schedule. Head Coach Karl Smesko, coming off a 34-win season and a NCAA Division II national runner-up, will play a solid non-conference schedule before diving into the 16-game conference slate in January of 2008.
“This is a very demanding schedule,” said Smesko. “We are going to learn a great deal about ourselves. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
The Eagles’ home schedule consists of 13 regular-season games, including two tournaments and a non-conference contest vs. Florida State at Alico Arena.
In league action, the Eagles, will play two games against Stetson, Jacksonville, North Florida, Kennesaw State and Mercer, while facing the other six A-Sun schools once apiece (although the Eagles could face Gardner-Webb in the consolation/championship game in the Cornell Tournament).
In non-conference action, the Eagles will host Florida State in the season opener, in addition to hosting two tournaments early in the season. FGCU will compete in tournaments at Cornell and Texas-Pan American.
The regular season begins with a home game vs. Florida State, who advanced to the NCAA Championships last season as a 10th seed, on Friday, Nov. 9, before the Green and Blue host a tournament Nov. 23-24. FGCU will meet Central Connecticut State on Nov. 23, before playing either Valparaiso or Eastern Kentucky in the consolation/championship game on Nov. 24.
The Eagles then head to Ithaca, N.Y., for the Cornell Classic on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. In the first round, the Eagles will face Bowling Green State University. The Falcons, a member of the Mid-American Conference, are coming off a 31-win season and the first NCAA `Sweet 16' appearance in Mid-American Conference history. BGSU also won both the MAC's regular-season and tournament titles for the third year in a row. The Eagles will face either Gardner Webb or the host Big Red on the second day of the Cornell Classic.
FGCU will then travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take on the Florida Gators on Dec. 4 before heading to Orlando, Fla. to meet Central Florida (Dec. 9).
Before the Christmas holiday, the Eagles will host their second tournament of the season. The Green and Blue will meet Texas-Pan American (Dec. 20) and will play either Memphis or Loyola University (Chicago) (Dec. 21) on day two of the tournament.
FGCU will have more than two weeks off before starting A-Sun Conference play. Back-to-back road games vs. Jacksonville (Jan. 5) and North Florida (Jan. 7) begin the 2008 calendar year as Smesko and the Eagles open the A-Sun slate. The Eagles then return home to host Stetson (Jan. 12), Kennesaw State (Jan. 19) and Mercer (Jan. 21).
The Eagles will face the following A-Sun schools once during the conference season; Gardner Webb (Jan. 26), Campbell (Jan. 28), Belmont (Feb. 2), Lipscomb (Feb. 4), USC-Upstate (Feb. 9) and East Tennessee (Feb. 11).
To round out the conference schedule, FGCU gets second conference go-arounds with Kennesaw State, Mercer and Stetson on the road on Feb. 16, Feb. 18 and Feb. 23, respectively, concluding with home games at Jacksonville on Feb. 28 and North Florida on March 1.
The Eagles wrap up the season by participating in the three-day National Independent Tournament on the campus of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Tex. on March 6-8. The field includes Texas-Pan American, Chicago State, NJ Tech, Utah Valley and Cal State Bakersfield.
The Eagles return two starters and six letter-winners from last year’s 34-1 team. The Eagles first appearance on the hardwood this season will be October 12, for a Tip-Off Madness which will begin at 9:00 pm in Alico Arena.
