FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team is ranked No. 11 in the Week 14 USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday night.
FGCU, which has won 16 consecutive games, finished the regular season at 28-1 and earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament. The fifth-seeded Eagles will face fourth-seeded Rollins College (28-1), ranked No. 9 in this week’s poll, in a first round South Region match-up on Friday at 1:00 p.m. EST. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The eight-team South Region tournament is being held at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas from March 10-13.
The only two unbeaten teams in Division II, Washburn (30-0) and the University of North Dakota - Grand Forks (28-0) hold down the top two spots. The University of Charleston (WV), Western Washington, and Drury University complete the top five.
Three other South Region teams are in this week’s national poll. Delta State (28-2), the top seed in the South Region, is No. 7. Henderson State (26-4), the second seed in the South, is ranked No. 13. Third-seed Fort Valley State (28-2) is No. 17.
The USA Today ESPN Board of Coaches is made up of 27 head coaches at Division II institutions. All are members of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
