No. 12 Eagles Take Lions for Second Time
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University won their 11th consecutive game Monday night with a 70-27 win over Florida Memorial in women’s basketball action at Alico Arena. The No. 12 Eagles improve to 23-1 overall.
The Eagles came out blazing in their second victory over Florida Memorial University in the past two weeks. FGCU built a strong 22-4 lead just ten minutes into the opening half before heading into the locker room with a 37-8 lead at the half. It was the fewest points allowed in a half in the four-year history of FGCU basketball.
12 players reached the scoring column for FGCU in the game with all 13 players seeing at least eight minutes of action. Junior forward Katie Schrader (Fort Collins, CO) led all scorers with 16 points total, including 13 in the first half alone. Schrader led the Eagles in rebounds as well with seven boards. Senior guard Ebonie Halliburton (East St. Louis, IL) collected nine points for the Eagles with six assists, six rebounds and four steals. Freshman guard Princess Stewart (Deerfield Beach, FL) was third on the team in points with eight points to go with four rebounds and an assist.
The Eagles shot 37 percent from the field, hitting 25-of-67 from the floor, including seven 3-pointers. They held a 53-30 rebounding advantage. FGCU handed out 16 assists and recorded 11 steals.
Florida Memorial was led by senior forward Courtney Jones with seven points and six rebounds.
The fifth regionally ranked Eagles travel to Palm Beach Atlantic University February 17th. Game time is 7:00 pm.
