FORT MYERS, Fla. – Less than 24 hours after setting a school-record for points in their season opener, the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team didn’t slow down overnight. FGCU rolled past the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 86-55 in the final game of the 4th Annual Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-Off Classic at Alico Arena on Sunday afternoon. One night after scoring 107 points in the season opener, the Eagles scored 46 points in the first half to cruise to their second win. A deadly combination of Katie Schrader in the post and Ebonie Halliburton on the perimeter propelled the Eagles. Schrader posted her first double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting from the low post and 10-of-14 from the foul line. It was her second consecutive game with at least 20 points. The junior forward had six offense rebounds as FGCU scored 25 points off second-chance opportunities. Meanwhile, Halliburton knocked a trio of three-pointers en route to her second 20-point effort in as many games. Junior forward Alex Nelson added 12 points and a team-high five assists while junior forward Jen Conely hit double figures off the bench for the second straight game with 10 points. The Eagles jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first eight minutes on the strength of two three-pointers from senior guard Candy Myers. FGCU led by 17, at 49-26, at the break. The Eagles went on a 12-4 run to open the second half as Mayaguez never got closer than 20 points the rest of the way. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (4-0) was led by Natalie Emannuelli’s 21 points. FGCU (2-0) will host Puerto Rico-Cayey on Tuesday, November 22 at 9 p.m.
