Women's Hoop Wins Exhibition Game Over FAU
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Junior forward Katie Schrader had a game-high 25 points to lead Division II Florida Gulf Coast University past Division I Florida Atlantic University 69-67 in a women’s college basketball exhibition on Sunday evening.
FGCU forward Jessica Hathaway drove inside and converted on a tough lay-up with 4.1 seconds remaining in the game to put the Eagles on top. The Owls had a chance to win as Brittney Crenshaw's three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.
FGCU had an early 12-4 lead before FAU countered with a 10-2 spurt to tie the game at 14. FAU took its first lead at 23-21 with 6:40 to go in the first half. But FGCU rallied for a 16-9 run to lead 37-32 at the break.
The Owls held their biggest lead of the night at 61-56 with 7:24 left in the game. FGCU completed its comeback by going on a 13-6 run to close out the contest. The game featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties.
Schrader hit 8-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the foul line to lead the Eagles. Senior guard Candy Myers added 17 points for FGCU, including four three-pointers, while sophomore forward Jessica Hathaway added eight points. Myers and senior forward Alex Kwiecinska each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Senior guard Shontavia Williams led the Owls with 25 points, including 13 in the final half.
The Eagles will have their final pre-season exhibition game at Florida A&M this coming Sunday November 13 at 2:00 p.m. FGCU opens the regular season in the 4th Annual Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-Off Classic against Puerto Rico Mayaguez on November 19 at 7:00 p.m.
