FGCU Women's Basketball Adds Three More Recruits
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team has added three recruits to the incoming class of 2005-06, according to head coach Karl Smesko.
Alexandra Nelson (Edinburgh, Scotland/Cincinnati State CC), Jennifer Conely (Warren, Minn./Lake Region State CC) and Shonna Soeby (Walhalla, N.D./Lake Region State CC) will all join the Eagles this fall and each will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Nelson led Cincinnati State to a 29-3 mark and sixth-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I tournament last year, averaging 10 points per game as the starting point guard. Projected to play wing at FGCU, the 5-foot-8 Nelson averaged 17 points, five rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in her freshman year in junior college. As a freshman, she was the only JUCO player nationally to record 100 steals and make more than 100 three-pointers.
A 5-foot-9 wing player, Conely averaged 10 points and six rebounds for a 30-4 Lake Region team that finished 15th at the NJCAA Division I tournament. Conely shot 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the three-point arc while sinking 91 percent of her free throws last year.
A teammate of Conely’s at Lake Region, Soeby is a 6-0 power forward who averaged 11 points and six rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field last year.
All three will have a chance to make an impact for the Eagles, who finished 21-9 a year ago.
“Good shooters are very important in our system, and Jen is an excellent shooter. She is also a very bright player and hard worker," said Smesko. “Shonna is an active, mobile post who can shoot the ball. She also has good post moves and is comfortable handling the ball. And I expect Alex to make a big impact this season. She can score and she makes a lot of defensive plays."
FGCU has now signed six players this summer. The three transfers join incoming freshmen Princess Stewart, Candace Carreras and Alexandra Axam in this year’s group of newcomers.
