FORT MYERS, FL – Danaea Williams had 27 points to lead Central State University of Ohio to a 56-47 win over Florida Gulf Coast University in women’s basketball action at Alico Arena Thursday night.
Central state opened the second half on a 14-3 run to extend a two-point halftime advantage to 37-24 at the15:15 mark. A three-point field goal by junior guard Candy Myers (New Batavia, OH) was the only field goal for FGCU for the first 9:47 of the half.
The Eagles went on a 10-4 run, capped by a three-pointer by junior guard Ebonie Halliburton (East St. Louis, IL), to pull within seven with just under nine minutes to play. Twice the Eagles cut the lead to five in the last two minutes but the Lady Marauders knocked 6-of-6 from the foul line down the stretch to secure the win.
Williams hit 12-of-19 from the floor, including a three-pointer, to lead Central State (19-5). Tamaka Clay added 19 points for the winners.
FGCU (17-8) was led by senior forward Andrea Clarke (Guelph, Ontario), who had 17 points and 10 rebounds against a much taller Lady Marauders front court. Halliburton chipped in 14 points as the Eagles were held to 28% shooting for the game.
Central State will meet Western New Mexico Friday morning at Alico Arena at 11 a.m. FGCU will take on Western New Mexico on Saturday evening at 5:45 p.m.
