Eagles Women Hoop's Team Tops All-Stars
FORT MYERS - Junior guard Candy Myers led five players in double figures as the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team completed a two-game sweep of Converse College this weekend with an easy 81-55 victory at Alico Arena Sunday afternoon.
Myers (New Batavia, OH) connected on 5-of-10 shots from the floor, including 5-of-9 from beyond the three point arc for a game-high 16 points. Myers has now hit a three-pointer in a school-record 31 games, dating back to last January. Senior forward Andrea Clarke (Guelph, Ontario) had 15 points, while junior forward Alex Kwiecinska (Mississauga, Ontario) and junior guard Megan Jones (Indianapolis, IN) had 11 points each.
Junior forward Andrea Holbrook posted a double-double for FGCU (17-7), with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After being held to 36 points and 27 percent from the floor on Saturday, the All-Stars kept the game close in the first half before the Eagles ran out to a 36-23 lead at intermission.
Though Converse shot 54.5% from the floor in the final 20 minutes, FGCU maintained a double-digit lead throughout the half. The Eagles held a big 41-30 lead on the boards against the taller All-Stars.
Center Melissa Bunce had 15 points to lead Converse (3-21), while forward Lauren Mueller had 12 points and guard Melissa Ballard had 11 points.
FGCU will host Central State University of Ohio and Western New Mexico University in the National Independent Tournament beginning Thursday at Alico Arena. Tip-off for the Lady Marauders (18-5) and the Eagles will be at 5:45 p.m.
