FORT MYERS, Fla – Junior guard Megan Jones scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures as the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team knocked off Florida Southern 56-51 at the Jenkins Fieldhouse in Lakeland on Tuesday night.
With the game tied at 14-14, the Eagles held the Mocs to just two free throws in the final 7:38 of the first half to build a 28-16 lead at halftime.
Florida Southern (2-4) pulled the game within two points on two occasions late in the game, with 5:52 remianing and again with just 35 seconds left, but couldn’t overcome the FGCU defensive pressure.
The Eagles held Florida Southern star Lucresia West to just 10 points on only six shots in the game. The Eagles held the Mocs to just 38.5% from the field, forcing 25 turnovers and recording 13 steals. FGCU also held a 22-7 advantage at the free throw line.
Junior guard Candy Myers, senior forward Andrea Clarke and junior guard Ebonie Halliburton each added 12 points for the Eagles, who improved to 4-2 on the year. Clarke and junior forward Andrea Holbrook had seven rebounds apiece for FGCU.
The Eagles travel to Valdosta, Georgia this weekend for games with West Georgia on Friday and Valdosta State on Saturday.
