2004-05 Women's hoop schedule announced
With 15 home games, Karl Smesko is looking for continued dominance at Alico Arena to propel Florida Gulf Coast University in its first year of NCAA Division II post-season eligibility.
With the move to full NCAA Division II membership, the Eagles will be competing head to head with some of the top teams in the NCAA Division II South region. The 27-game schedule is highlighted by five tournaments being held on campus, including the 3rd Annual Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-Off Classic and a season-ending National Independent Tournament.
The Eagles, who have won 24 of 25 games at Alico Arena the past two seasons, will host the likes of Sunshine State Conference members St. Leo, Eckerd and a home and home series with rival Florida Southern. The University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon, who handed FGCU its only home loss last year, visits in November.
FGCU will face several stiff tests on the road as they travel to 2004 NCAA tournament qualifiers West Florida in January and Christian Brothers University in February.
“We plan an extremely challenging schedule,” said head coach Karl Smesko, 48-9 in his first two seasons at FGCU. “We are going to have to be ready early. The schedule will definitely prepare us for the post-season in the event we are able to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.”
The home opener is set for Monday, November 15 against St. Leo University at Alico Arena at 7:00 p.m. Season ticket packages begin at $90 and can be purchased by calling (239) 590-7146.
