Eagles defeat Nova Southeastern 68-60

Fort Myers – The FGCU women’s basketball team defeated Nova Southeastern tonight 68-60. The knights played the toughest first half the eagles have seen the entire season as both teams traded baskets early. Two early treys by eagles leading scorer Trish Fleming helped give FGCU an early 9-8 lead. The knight’s frontcourt was hard to stop as both Jessie Pate, and Charity Rainey made their presence in the post by combining for 29 points and 29 rebounds tonight. The game was tied at 30-30 at the 3:25 mark in the first half after two free throws from Tahaji Felder. The eagles would take a 36-32 lead into the locker room after two free throws from Noreen McCallum The game was close the entire second half until the 7:02 mark when the eagles went on a 7-0 run led by two baskets from Fleming to put FGCU up 61-51. Jessie Pate would close the gap to 3 after a jumper with 1:38 to play, but eagle center Robyn Swain would counter with a pair of free throws with: 57 seconds to play. Junior sharp shooter Rebecca Stewart would seal the victory making two free throws of her own with: 17 seconds to play to give the eagles their 24th victory of the season. Trish Fleming led the way again for the eagles as she scored 25 points including 4 treys. Three other eagles were in double figures as Noreen McCallum scored 11, and Jennifer Santana added 10. Junior center Robyn Swain recorded another double double as she scored 10 points and pulled down 11 boards. The knights were led by senior Jessie Pate who scored 20 points and pulled down an impressive 18 rebounds in the loss. Charity Rainey scored 9 points and pulled down 11 boards of her own. FGCU will be back in action this Thursday as they head to Clearwater Christian. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
