FGCU Head Coach Karl Smesko to Appear on Fox Sports 1670 AM on Friday
MACON, Ga. – Florida Gulf Coast Women's Basketball Head Coach Karl Smesko is the next guest on Friday's Atlantic Sun Insider segment on FOX Sports 1670 AM.
The regular Friday segment begins at approximately 8:30 a.m., as Coach Smesko joins hosts Daniel Shirley and Charles Olson. His Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (11-5, 4-0 A-Sun) travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to face ETSU (3-7, 1-2 A-Sun) for a 1:30 p.m. tip on ASun.TV.
Smesko is in his 11th season guiding the Eagles and posts a 272-54(.834) overall mark at FGCU, which includes an impressive 86-12(.877) record in A-Sun games. As a result of the Eagles' successful 2011-12 campaign (29-3 overall, A-Sun record 18-0), Smesko garnered several honors including the 2012 Kay Yow National Coach of the Year and his third A-Sun Coach of the Year recognition. Smesko has led the Eagles to three A-Sun regular season championships, one A-Sun Championship and five consecutive postseason tournament appearances.
FGCU is tied with Stetson atop the A-Sun and is currently ranked 10th in the latest release of the 2012-13 CollegeInsider.com Women's Basketball Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Eagles are winners of 22 consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference regular season games and are led by Sarah Hansen and Brittany Kennedy. Hansen is in the top five of six A-Sun individual statistical categories, including second in scoring (17.4 points per game) and free throw percentage (.879). Hansen also ranks 16th nationally in free throw percentage and has tallied five double-doubles this season. Kennedy also ranks among the league leaders in five individual categories and is the A-Sun leader in field goal percentage (.537) and steals (3.1 per game).
The Atlantic Sun Conference is partnering for the second consecutive year with the local Fox Sports 1670 AM as a part of its promotional efforts of men’s and women’s basketball leading up to the 2013 General Shale Atlantic Sun Basketball Championships, March 6-9, at Hawkins Arena on the campus of Mercer University. Included in the partnership, The Atlantic Sun Insider is a regular segment to highlight weekly A-Sun action on the Friday edition of “The Morning Show.” A schedule of commercials will also run during the station’s local and syndicated shows, and additional coverage will include live broadcasts during the championships from the University Center on the station’s local afternoon show, “The Bill Shanks Show.”
