ST. THOMAS, USVI - Senior Betsy Adams (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes HS/Valpo) scored a game-high 21 points as the FGCU women's basketball team shook off a slow start but fell to BIG EAST foe DePaul, 60-58, Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands.
With the loss, FGCU falls to 2-2 overall, while the Blue Demons improve to 4-1 on the season. The Eagles are now 2-3 all-time against BIG EAST competition.
The Eagles, who led the nation in three-point field goals per game (10.7) last season, knocked down 7-of-31 shots from behind the arc. Three different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led by Adams’ 5-of-16 night.
Adams led the Eagles with 21 points, two rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes. Redshirt junior Sarah Hansen (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) registered her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Freshman Katie Meador (Salem, Ill./Salem Community HS) turned in a solid performance for the Eagles, finishing with six points, seven rebounds and three steals. Taylor Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wisc./Cudahy HS) chipped in with eight points in just six minutes.
Brittany Hrynko led DePaul with 18 points, while Chanise Jenkins added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Demons.
DePaul came out swinging in the first half and grabbed a 20-8 lead 7:15 into the period. FGCU responded with a 12-4 run, highlighted by five points from Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) and four from Meador, to cut the Blue Demon lead down to one (24-23) with 6:20 left in the half.
The teams would play even the rest of the way and DePaul took a 35-34 lead into the locker room at the intermission. FGCU, after the slow start, outscored the Blue Demons 23-15 over the final 11:40 of the half.
The Blue Demons grabbed a 53-44 lead at the 5:54 mark of the second half, after coming out of intermission with a one-point advantage.
The Green and Blue answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a Gradinjan layup, to cut the DePaul lead to two points with just 3:53 left to play.
A Jasmine Penny layup capped a 6-0 Blue Demon run that pushed the DePaul lead back to eight points (59-51) with 3:14 left on the clock. The Eagles didn’t fold and Gradinjan, who was fouled shooting a triple from the left wing, calmly knocked in three free-throws to make the score 59-54 with 2:06 left.
FGCU would make it interesting in the final 28 seconds, converting two quick layups and having DePaul miss a few crucial free throws, but the Blue Demons held on take the Thanksgiving Day game.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday, November 23 when they take on undefeated South Carolina (5-0) on the second day of the Paradise Jam. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
