MACON, Ga. – The defending Atlantic Sun Conference regular season champion FGCU women’s volleyball team has added an ESPN3 broadcast to the 2013 season, as announced Wednesday by the Atlantic Sun.
The Green and Blue will face Lipscomb on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Nashville, Tenn. with a start time of 2:30 p.m. The showcase will be the Eagles’ first appearance on ESPN3.
The Eagles have met the Lady Bison on 10 occasions during regular-season conference action since 2007 and have battled to a 5-5 record. Last season, FGCU defeated Lipscomb 3-0 at Allen Arena in October and followed suit with a 3-0 win at Alico Arena in November. The wins helped the Eagles finish the 2012 campaign with a conference record of 16-2.
The A-Sun proudly continues to expand what began as a 16-match regular season volleyball schedule on ESPN3 announced in mid-August. Through its relationship with the multi-screen sports network, the A-Sun continues to provide additional original content that includes a myriad of conference and nonconference matches that has grown to a total of 19 matches.
The growth occurs as the A-Sun continues to enhance its role as a leader in on-campus production. The league became the first to adopt the conference-wide on-campus production model, and the commitment to the initiative has resulted in a 300 percent increase in television-caliber live productions since 2011. The schedule also rivals that of any of the NCAA’s 31 Division I conferences.
“The A-Sun’s position as a leader in campus-produced digital content lets us continue to expand our schedule of events delivered through the WatchESPN platform,” said A-Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “We’re extremely proud to spotlight our talented student-athletes, their teams and the A-Sun institutions through this initiative and we thank our partners at ESPN as this cooperative effort builds an unmatched distribution network for A-Sun content."
Last season the A-Sun’s volleyball semifinals and championship were available on ESPN3 live from Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena. Lipscomb became the first A-Sun member to provide original on-campus programming for the network in November of 2012, producing a total of 15 events that included volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball.
Access to live programming on ESPN3 online at WatchESPN.com and through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members is also available at no additional cost to fans that receive their Internet subscription from an affiliated provider. A complete list of participating providers is available at WatchESPN.com.
The Eagles currently hold a record of 5-10 with a 3-1 mark in Atlantic Sun action. FGCU most recently defeated Bethune-Cookman 3-0 to extend its winning streak to four games.
