SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica – The 28th Central American and Caribbean Swimming (CCCAN) Championships got underway from San José, Costa Rica on Monday, July 1 with a trio of FGCU swimmers collecting a total of four medals. A total of 15 nations are competing in the championships hosted by the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation.

Junior-to-be Karen Vilorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Elvel School) led the charge by winning the 200-meter IM for Honduras to collect a gold medal with a time of 2:28.00 while fellow Eagle and redshirt sophomore-to-be Lani Cabrera (Bardbados/St. Ursula’s Secondary School) took home a silver for Barbados in the 800-meter freestyle with her second place finish by posting a time of 9:21.97 in the event.

Sophomore-to-be Samantha Rahael (Trinidad & Tobago/The Bolles School) rounded out the flock of FGCU swimmers by collecting a pair of bronze medals after finishing third in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.91) and third in the 200-meter IM (2:28.82) for Trinidad & Tobago.

“I am so excited that all of the Eagles here for different countries collected medals today with Karen taking home gold,” said FGCU head coach Neal Studd. “I am also so proud that Samantha has been named the captain for Trinidad and Tobago and Lani was named the Barbados captain. That means so much at this meet with some teams having as many as 40 swimmers.  To be a captain for your country is a huge honor and a testament to the type of leaders we look to produce at FGCU.”

Coach Studd is serving as the Honduras coach during the championships with his squad sitting in second in the medal count with a total of six medals, four of which are gold.
