GAINESVILLE, Fla. – FGCU's Swimming and Diving team finishes in third place with 596 points after the final day of the All-Florida Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center in Gainesville Sunday night.
Host Florida finished in first place with 1141.5 points, followed by FSU with 763.5 and Miami with 570 points, in fourth. FAU (385), North Florida (244), Nova Southeastern (141) and Rollins (16) rounded out the bottom four teams after the three-day event. “We had a really great last day and we were able to overtake Miami and finish in third” said head coach Neal Studd. “Julie Leth-Espensen, Jennifer Morgan, and Eva Lehtonen all swam well and we finished up with two great relays.”
The Eagles started off with 10th and 12th place finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle from junior Jessie Porter (Chorleywood, Hertforshire, United Kingdom/Royal Masonic), and senior Eva Lehtonen (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS/Florida) with times of 17:23.58 and 17:27.81, respectively.
FGCU picked up more points from freshmen Jennifer Morgan (Edmonton, Canada/Harry Ainlay HS) when she finished in fifth place with a time of 2:03.22 of the 200-yard backstroke “A” final. Sophomore Heather Coutts (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny HS/Houston) and senior Jamie Akenberger (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS/BGSU) finished in ninth and 10th place with times of 2:06.23 and 2:07.14, respectively in the same event.
Senior Megan Wolfe (Sebring, Fla./Sebring HS/Daytona State College) picked up an eighth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle when she finished with a time of 52.90.
Freshman Julie Leth-Espensen (Vanloese, Copenhagen, Denmark) added a fourth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke “A” final with a time 2:18.84.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Wolfe, freshman Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy), Morgan and Lehtonen took home a fourth place finish with a time 3:29.87. The second team of junior Christina Tanninen (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson), Akenberger, Coutts and Porter finished with a time of 3:32.86, good for eighth place in the event.
In diving, senior Maegan Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee/FAU) took home a ninth place finish in the one-meter dive event, with a score of 202.50. Sophomore Cayla Collins (Largo, Fla./Osceola) finished in seventh place of the three-meter dive event, with a score of 227.05.
FGCU will be back in action Saturday, October 6th, when they return home to face-off with Florida State University at the FGCU Aquatics Complex. The competition is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
