FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast sand volleyball team defeated Stetson, 3-2, its first-ever home match on Friday at Estero Community Park.
The Eagles (2-3) have now won back-to-back matches for the first time in program history. FGCU defeated Stetson (4-6), 4-1, last weekend at the Seminole Sand Battle held at Florida State’s Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex (Mar. 24).
Gigi Meyer (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) and Camil Dominguez (Santo Domingo, D.R./Santa Teresita), who played in the No. 5 spot, opened the afternoon with a three-set victory (21-19, 17-21, 15-13) over Stetson’s Claudia Kalin and Stephanie Marin. FGCU’s No. 4 squad, Jill Hopper (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown HS) and Whitney Masters (Muncie, Ind./Wapahani HS), gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the match after defeating SU in straight-sets (21-18, 21-19).
After Karina Mambuca (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) and Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) has to forfeit their match due to injury, the Eagles secured their second victory of the season when the No. 3 pairing of Brooke Kohler (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Clemson) and Brittany Muse (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) made quick work of Stetson’s Katie DiGirolamo and Alisha Hoffman and won their matchup in straight-sets (21-17, 21-11).
Holly Youngquist (Estero, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) and Kaitlin Holm (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS/Marshall) fell to Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett (21-17, 13-21, 10-15) in a battle of No. 1 squads.
The Eagles will return to the sand on Wednesday, April 11 when they host the Owls of FAU at the Estero Community Park. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
