Opened in the Fall of 2002, Alico Arena is a 131,000 square-foot complex, which serves as the centerpiece of Florida Gulf Coast University's NCAA Division I athletics program. In particular, with its oval configuration, the 4,500-seat Arena's primary function is for FGCU's basketball and volleyball programs for both competition and practice. It is also the home to the John & Linda Beale Administrative Offices. Named after Alico Incorporated, whose generous contributions have made Alico Arena one of the premiere athletic venues in South Florida, it provides a home to one of the fastest growing athletic programs in NCAA Division I.
Alico Arena also brings people together for more than just sporting events, as the venue has the ability to host a wide range of other special events each year, such as concerts, speakers, road shows, tradeshows, corporate events, athletic and recreation camps, University Commencement, High School Graduations, and corporate functions. Over the years, the facility has hosted the Beach Boys concerts, U.S. Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Dick Cheney, former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev, retired General Colin Powell, former First Lady Laura Bush, and acclaimed poet and author Maya Angelou.
The main arena contains a floor with four full-sized basketball and volleyball courts, as well as six private suites, the Doc & Cinda Ryan Conference Room, and 11 locker rooms. Additionally, the Arena is home to the 10,000 square foot Sublett Family Strength & Conditioning Center on the west side.
In the Fall of 2017, the facility witnessed an 12,000 square foot Lester Athletics Administrative Complex addition to the southeast side. The significant enhancements renovated and enlarged the Beale Head Men's Basketball Coach's Suite, the Beale Head Women's Basketball Coach's Suite, the Lester Director of Athletics Suite, the creation of Athletics Advancement Offices, a state of the art theatre, and the Hartley Academic Resource Center, as well as extensively expanded the Schreiner Family Sports Medicine Center. The project incorporated several sustainability initiatives, such as utilizing all LED lighting, maximizing daylight views and insulation on the building envelope beyond code regulations. Additionally, FGCU now utilizes "daylight harvesting" in its lighting system, where any of the spaces with windows have sensors that monitor light levels and automatically dim the lights as the daylight levels increase. Likewise, sun shade devices were added to the southern facing windows to reduce the solar heat gain.
Behind the Auxiliary Bleachers on the west side of the Arena sits the Auxiliary Gym. The 9,000 square foot spaces has two drop down hoops with a full-sized basketball and volleyball court. This gym is used as the primary area for intramural basketball for Campus Recreation. This open gymnasium has the functionality to host a variety of special events bringing people together for sporting entertainment, academic, philanthropies, and business activities.
The court is overlooked by the Hillmyer-Tremont Foundation Suite on the north side of the facility. This multipurpose space not only serves as a main hub for invited guests and groups on game day, but the room is also used to host several events from guest speakers to large meetings to special luncheons. The room is set up with two drop down projection screens and two flat panels TVs, complete with surround sound. All of the technology ties into the Arena's and University's technology system and has endless capabilities.
On the east side, six skybox VIP Suites overlook the court. These private suites are complete with cable television, serving counters, refrigerators, and fixed seating. They are highlighted by the midcourt President's Suite, which serves as an area on game days where invited guests can mingle with the University's President and other dignitaries.
Aside from the activity areas, the Arena houses locker rooms for men's and women's basketball, beach and indoor volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's tennis, visiting teams, and officials. The Arena is also home to the Athletics Ticket Office, primary equipment room and to showcase FGCU Athletics successes via a trophy display area in the entry lobby.
