FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU softball team will host the Ospreys of North Florida in a three-game series this weekend at the FGCU Softball Complex. The series will begin Friday, April 18 with a double header beginning at 5 p.m. and will conclude Saturday at 2 p.m.

Friday’s double header will honor the Strikeout Cancer initiative that raises funds for the American Cancer Society.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink.

The Eagles are 25-21-1 on the season after taking two-of-three games against Jacksonville last weekend and hold an 8-10 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Green and Blue are 21-9-1 in games played on its home field this season.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .441 to rank 29th in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .968 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with eight home runs and 40 RBI through 47 games. Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 35 times to rank second in the conference with 84 total bases.  Carpenter is also ranked third in the conference in slugging percentage with a .684.

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla/Venice High School) adds an average of .353 for FGCU with 42 hits in 119 at bats. Zgrabik also has 12 hits over the fence and has knocked in 38 runs. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .344 and ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks fourth in the nation for triples and first in the conference with five.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .271 and has outscored its opponents, 180-160.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.36 and holds a record of 10-5 in the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 34 earned runs through 101.1 innings of work. Freshman Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./ Pace High School) has an ERA of 3.34 in 16 appearances.  She has started 5 games for the Eagles and has allowed 25 earned runs in 52.1 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.00 and has struck out 121 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just .278.


The Ospreys are 25-19 on the season and 9-12 in Atlantic Sun play.  UNF recently took two-of-three games against conference opponent ETSU in a weekend matchup last week.

The Eagles are 6-6 in all time meetings with the Ospreys dating back to the 2004 season.  FGCU fell to UNF 2-1 in its last matchup in the A-Sun tournament during an elimination game last season. 

North Florida is led by senior veterans Marissa Thomas and Danica Mandarano.  Thomas holds a batting average of .292 with 38 hits, 28 runs, six home runs and 22 RBI.  Mandarano maintains a .269 batting average and has 39 hits, 21 runs and one home run for 10 RBI.

From the circle the Ospreys are led by junior Kaylie Wallace and senior Cortney Radke.  Wallace has a record of 12-7 with 70 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.17.  Radke maintains a record of 9-4 with 76 strikeouts for a 2.42 ERA.

Head coach Marcie Hickey is in her sixth year as the softball coach at UNF.

Next Up 

FGCU will host its last conference home games against A-Sun foe Mercer (29-17; 11-8 A-Sun) in a three-game series next weekend.  The Eagles and Bears will begin the matchup Saturday, April 26, with the first pitch of the series scheduled for 2 p.m.
