FORT MYERS, FLA. - The FGCU softball team will break from Atlantic Sun Action to take on the Panthers of FIU in a double header this week.  The matchup will begin at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex. 

The Eagles are 19-17-1 on the season and enter Wednesday’s bout with a six-game losing streak.  The Green and Blue last earned a win in a nonconference matchup against UConn at the FGCU Softball Complex on Mar. 18.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .439 to rank 32nd in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .981 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with six home runs and 31 RBI through 37 games. Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 27 times to rank among the top 30 in the nation in on base percentage.  Carpenter is also ranked fourth in the conference in slugging percentage with a .692. 

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla/Venice High School) adds an average of .340 for FGCU with 32 hits in 94 at bats. Zgrabik has also hit seven hits over the fence and has knocked in 28 runs. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .315 and ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks eighth in the nation for triples with four.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .266 and has outscored its opponents, 146-132.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School) as she maintains an ERA of 2.80 and holds a record of 4-3 in the circle.  Owen has allowed just 22 earned runs through 55 innings of work. Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) has an ERA of 3.13 in 15 appearances.  She has started 12 games for the Eagles and has allowed 31 earned runs in 69.1 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.16 and has struck out 99 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just .277.


The Panthers travel to Fort Myers with a record of 22-13 on the season and a 5-4 Conference USA mark.  The Panthers recently took two-of-three games against Eastern Carolina University and previously defeated the Eagles 7-4 at the FIU Invitational in February.

The Eagles are 2-7 in all-time meetings with the Panthers dating back to the 2007-08 season.  FGCU last defeated FIU 10-0 to open the 2012-13 season.  In that game, Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla/Harmony High School) produced six RBI on a three-run double and a three-run homerun.  Morgan earned the win for FGCU with just two hits allowed through five complete innings.

FIU is led by freshman Stephanie Texeira and junior Krystal Garcia.  Texeira has a .402 batting average and has 41 hits and six homeruns for 27 RBI.  Garcia maintains a .343 batting average with 34 hits and four homeruns for 22 RBI.

From the circle the Panthers are led by sophomore Corinne Jenkins and junior Shelby Graves.  Jenkins has a record of 12-4 with 63 strike outs for an ERA of .343.  Graves holds a record of 9-6 with 63 strike outs for a 3.63 ERA. 

Head coach Jake Schumann is in his 3rd season with FIU. 

Next Up

FGCU will return to the FGCU Softball Complex to take on conference opponent Kennesaw State (18-16; 7-4 A-Sun) in a three-game series this weekend.  The Eagles and Owls will begin battle on Saturday, April 5, with the first pitch of the series scheduled for 2 p.m.
