DeLAND, Fla. – The FGCU softball team lost a pair of games to Stetson University Sunday afternoon at the Patricia Wilson Softball Complex to complete the three-game series in DeLand. The Eagles dropped game one by a score of 4-1 before being narrowly edged in game two with a 2-1 loss. The Green and Blue falls to 19-17-1 on the season with a 4-8 mark in Atlantic Sun action, while the Hatters improve to 25-5 and 9-2 in conference play.
The Eagles produced eight hits on the day for two runs, while the Hatters recorded 10 hits and six runs to outlast FGCU. Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) led the team with two hits in game one.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard quickly with two-consecutive singles to open the first inning. With two runners on, Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake High School) reached on an error and allowed Makensie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) to cross the plate and give FGCU a one-run lead.
The Hatters responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to claim the lead on their first opportunity. Stetson connected on two singles before a double to right center field scored a run for the home team. The Hatters added a second run with a bases loaded hit by pitch and concluded the first inning with a 2-1 lead.
Stetson increased its lead to two runs in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to center field.
Both teams were held scoreless through the third, fourth and fifth innings before the home team added one final run in the bottom of the sixth. The Stetson batter reached base on a hit by pitch and advanced on an infield error. A single to left center enabled the run to score to bring the final score to 4-1.
Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero High School) earned the loss for FGCU with three earned runs allowed on seven hits. She pitched six complete innings with one strikeout and one walk.
The Eagles again put a run on the scoreboard to start the game. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) singled to right field to lead off the Eagle’s batting order and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Barnes moved to third on an illegal pitch and scored on a wild pitch to put FGCU ahead 1-0.
The Hatters needed just one inning to take and hold the lead as the home team scored two runs on a homerun to left field in the bottom of the first and never relinquished the lead.
Both teams added just one hit through the remainder of the game and held the 2-1 score to the game’s completion.
Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School) was credited for the loss for FGCU. Owen pitched six complete innings with two runs allowed on three hits. She struck out five batters and walked only one while throwing 61 strikes in 100 pitches.
The Eagles will break from Atlantic Sun Conference action as they host FIU in a midweek double header on Wednesday, April 2. The games are scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
