NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The FGCU softball team dropped two tough games to Lipscomb Saturday afternoon at Draper Diamond to begin Atlantic Sun action.  The Lady Bisons produced two walk-off wins to defeat the Eagles during their first weekend of conference action.  The Eagles fell 6-4 in seven innings in game one before dropping game two 4-5 in eight innings.  FGCU falls to 12-10-1 on the season with a 0-2 mark in conference, while Lipscomb improves to 19-3 and 4-1 in A-Sun play.

The Eagles produced 15 total hits on the day and scored eight runs but were unable to stop the Lady Bison’s timely hitting.

Individually, Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep High School) and Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor)  led the Eagles with three RBI each on the day.  Both recorded homeruns on the day to aid the Eagles’ offensive effort.

“Our team played well today,” said head coach Dave Deiros.  “We had a chance to win both games. We’ll look to rebound tomorrow.”

As the game’s first batter, Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) drew a walk to put a runner on base for FGCU in the top of the first.  Carpenter advanced to second and then to third on two groundouts.  With two outs Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) roped a single to center field to score Carpenter and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead after one inning.

The Eagles maintained a 1-0 lead through the fourth inning before Lipscomb battled in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Bisons used a string of hits to load the bases with one out.  Another single up the middle drove in two runs to give the home team a 2-1 lead through five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Tori Van Camp (Zellwood, Fla./Apopka High School) started the inning by reaching on an infield error.  Carpenter followed with a single up the middle to put two runners on and both advanced on a groundout.  Bembnowski singled up the middle to score both runners and put the Eagles back on top, 3-2.

Lipscomb was quick to respond in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out double down the left-field line.  A walk and two-consecutive singles scored one run and tied the game at three after six innings.

The Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh to go ahead when Garabedian knocked a solo shot over the fence.  The Eagles led 4-3 as they entered the bottom of the seventh.

Lipscomb quickly tied the game at four with a solo homerun to left center field.  The Bison’s next batter walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before the Bisons saw their second homerun of the inning.  The two-run homer put the home team ahead with a 6-4 walk-off win.

Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) pitched 5.2 innings for the Eagles and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School) relieved Morgan in the sixth and allowed three runs to score on just two hits to earn the loss.  Owen falls to 2-1 on the season.

The second game of the double header began with two scoreless innings.  The Bisons got on the scoreboard first after the second batter walked and scored from first on a single to right field.

The Eagles quickly responded with two runs in the top of the fourth when Zgrabik singled to left field and crossed the plate on a Bembnowski homerun.  Bembowski’s bomb was her third of the season and gave FGCU a 2-1 lead after 3.5 innings.

Lipscomb added another run to tie the game at two in the bottom of the fourth.  The Bisons’ leadoff batter singled up the middle to begin the inning and advanced to second on a bunt and third on a wild pitch.  The runner scored on another single up the middle to even the score.

The Green and Blue added two runs in the top of the fifth when Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) singled and Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) walked to put two runners on for Garabedian.  Garabedian recorded her third RBIs of the day with a single that scored McAvoy and Ross and gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead through five innings.

While just two outs away from a 4-2 loss, Lipscomb produced a single and a double to put runners in scoring position.  A two-out double to center field scored both base runners to tie the game at four and send game two into extra innings.

Jeanie Verderese (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside High School) singled in the top of the eighth but the Eagles were unable to put a run on the board.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bisons led off with a double to right center.  A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third before a single through the left side enabled the runner to score to give the Bisons their second walk-off win of the day, 5-4 in eight innings.

Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero High School) pitched seven complete innings for FGCU with four earned runs on 10 hits.  Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace High School) entered for Josie in the eighth and gave up one run on two hits for the loss.  Wade falls to 2-3 on the season.

FGCU and Lipscomb will meet in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.  The Eagles will then return to Fort Myers for a midweek double header with Florida State University and Virginia Tech.  The Eagles will take on Virginia Tech at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 and will follow with a game against FSU at 7 p.m.
