NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As it begins the quest for a second Atlantic Sun Championship, the FGCU softball team will start conference play this weekend at Lipscomb University.  The Eagles will play a three-game series in Nashville with a double header on Saturday, March 8 and a single game on Sunday, March 9.  First pitch on both days is slated for 2 p.m. EST.

The Green and Blue

After earning an 8-0 win over Michigan State to conclude the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Spring Break Tournament, the Eagles currently stand at 12-8-1 on the season.

Last weekend, the Green and Blue was led by Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School), who went 3-for-5 from the plate with one run and three hits including one homerun and six total bases.  Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) added to the Eagles’ offensive success with five RBI in the win over Michigan State after hitting a grand slam in the second inning.

Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) led the Eagles from the circle with six strikeouts and did not allow an earned through 12 complete innings.

Carpenter leads the team on the season with an average of .500.  She has boosted the team through 21 games with 22 RBI, four homeruns and a slugging percentage of .817.  Ross and Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) also hold averages over .300 with marks of .370 and .311, respectively.  Ross has knocked in 17 RBI and hit four homeruns through 18 games.

Morgan leads the team with an ERA of 2.75 this season in 34.1 innings.  She has produced a record of 5-2 in seven appearances to lead the pitching staff.  Overall, the staff has four pitchers with over 30 innings pitched and has maintained a team ERA of 2.91.

Offensively, the team has held a combined average of .281 and has outscored opponents 100-74.

THE BISONS

Lipscomb started conference play last weekend with a series at the University of North Florida.  After falling 12-4 in the opening game, the Bisons won the series with 9-0 and 7-0 wins in the double header.  The team now sits at 17-3 on the season with a four-game win streak that was extended with two wins over Ohio University on Wednesday.

Under ninth-year head coach Kristin Ryman, Lipscomb was selected to finish third in the preseason Atlantic Sun Coaches’ Poll, behind only USC Upstate and FGCU.  The team finished 34-25 last season and fell to Upstate in the conference championship game.

This season, the Bisons are led by junior heavy hitters Paige Neely and Brianne Welch.  The duo is batting .400 through 20 games, each with three homeruns on the season.  Neely leads the squad with 17 RBI.

Senior Ashley Anderson has produced the strongest performances in the circle for Lipscomb with a 7-0 record and an ERA of 0.84.  Anderson has struck out 37 batters in 50 innings through nine appearances this season.
