FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team opened the 2014 FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational with a walk-off win over LIU Brooklyn and a 6-2 loss to Hofstra on Friday night.  The Eagles move to 11-8-1 on the season and begin the tournament with a 1-1 record.

Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) led the Eagles with two hits and a walk on the night.  Ross added a homerun and a team-high two RBI, while Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) added four hits in eight at bats.

Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School)  earned the Eagles’ win with no runs allowed through seven innings.

Game One

The Eagles opened the bottom of the second with consecutive singles from Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep High School) and Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony High School) put runners on base with no outs.  After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, the runners were in scoring position as Barnes stepped into the batter’s box.  Barnes reached on an error to score Garabedian and put the Eagles ahead 1-0.

Morgan held the Blackbirds scoreless through six innings to help the home team maintain the lead.  The Eagles turned two double plays to stop the Blackbirds attack and entered the final inning with a one-run advantage.

LIU opened the top of the seventh by reaching on an infield error and moved the runner to second on a passed ball.  The runner crossed the plate after a fielder’s choice and another infield error to knot the game at one run each.

Barnes singled to right field to open the bottom of the seventh to put the winning run on base.  With two outs, Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) roped a double to the left-field wall that scored Barnes from first to give the Eagles a 2-1 walk-off win.

Morgan earned the victory for FGCU to move to 4-2 on the season.  She allowed no earned runs to improve her ERA to 2.86.

Game Two

The Eagles faced Colonial Athletic Association power Hofstra in the second game of the night.

After one scoreless inning, the Pride started a rally with a single up the middle by their leadoff batter. A double later in the inning scored a run to give Hofstra a 1-0 lead before the Pride recorded a single and another double to score two more runs in the second.

The Pride added one run on three hits and an error in the third and went ahead 6-0 in the fourth with two runs on three hits.  Although Hofstra took the lead, the Eagles stopped the visiting team from extending the lead by leaving three Hofstra runners on base.

With a 6-0 deficit, the Eagles went to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning.  After two quick outs, Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) singled up the middle to put an FGCU runner on base.  As the next batter, Ross homered over the right-field fence to score two runs for the home team.

The Eagles produced three more base runners before the end of the game but could not catch the Pride’s lead.  The home team ultimately fell 6-2 and helped Hofstra head coach Bill Edwards to his 900th career win.

Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero High School) earned the loss for the Eagles with three earned runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings.  Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace High School) pitched 3.1 innings with two runs allowed, while Jackie Owen  (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School)  pitched 1.1 innings with no runs allowed.

After taking Saturday off, the Eagles will resume action with a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Michigan State.
