FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team will host its third tournament of the 2014 season at the FGCU Softball Complex Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2. The FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Spring Break Tournament will include games against LIU Brooklyn, Hofstra and Michigan State. Eastern Michigan and Bethune-Cookman will also participate in the tournament.
The Green and Blue
After splitting a double header with Oakland and Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, the Eagles hold a record of 10-7-1. The team has outscored its opponents 88-67 in 18 games this season. FGCU maintains a team batting average of .284, while holding opponents to a mark of .273 with 67 runs on 127 hits.
Overall on the season junior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) leads the team with 27 hits in 51 at bats. She has recorded six doubles, three homeruns and 16 RBI for an .827 slugging percentage and a batting average of .529. Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) and Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) also maintain an average of over .300 for the Eagles.
From the circle, Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) leads the team with 29 innings pitched in seven appearances. The senior has struck out 14 batters and holds an ERA of 2.66 and a record of 2-0.
The Tournament Field
FGCU will begin the tournament Friday as the team takes on LIU Brooklyn at 4:45 p.m. The 4-10 Blackbirds are led by hitters Kayla Gloady and Madison Green. Gloady has paced the team with an average of .306 with four RBI, while Green has eight total hits with two doubles and has drawn four walks. Leading the pitching staff is freshman Shelley Procter with an ERA of 3.17 and redshirt senior Cassie Vondrak with a 5.54 ERA. LIU Brooklyn is led by head coach Roy Kortmann in his 20th season.
Later that night FGCU will face 4-1 Hofstra in a 7 p.m. matchup. The Pride earned wins over Massachusetts, USF, Illinois State and Connecticut in last weekend’s USF tournament. Hofstra returns senior sluggers Becca Bigler and Rachael Senatore. Bigler is hitting .545 through five games with five RBI, while Senatore has hit .471 with four RBI on the year. From the circle, Hofstra is led by juniors Taylor Pirone with nine strike outs for a 2.56 ERA and Morgan Lashley with 13 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.58. The team is led by long-time head coach Bill Edwards. Edwards enters the weekend with 898 career wins.
The Eagles will break from competition on Saturday and will reconvene with a 2:30 p.m. game against Michigan State on Sunday. The Spartans are 4-7 this season with wins over Georgetown, UNC-Wilmington and Rhode Island. The team fell to Atlantic Sun foe Stetson to begin the season. Ellie Stoffer leads the team with an average of .357 at the plate. Stoffer has recorded five hits in 14 at bats with one homerun and three RBI. Carly Nielson adds seven hits for the Spartans, while Kassidy Kujawa paces the team with eight RBI. The pitching staff is led by freshman Valerie Kaff with 17 strike outs and an ERA of 3.36 and senior Kelly Smith with 23 strikeouts in 29 innings and an ERA of 5.7. Jacquie Joseph leads Michigan State as head coach in her 21st season.
The FGCU/Four Points Sheraton Spring Break Tournament will get underway Friday at 10 a.m. as Bethune-Cookman takes on Eastern Michigan. The tournament will feature five games on Friday, five games on Saturday and three games on Sunday for a total of 13 contests, all at the FGCU Softball Complex.
